Marathon runners on the run in cityJust because anyone can sign up for a marathon, that doesn’t mean it’s something people should take lightly. Not preparing for a marathon can have painful side effects that you’ll feel for days and even weeks after you’ve finished. So, give your first marathon the best effort you can by implementing the below tips.

Before you get serious about marathon training, you need to start with the basics. Until you can run 30 minutes straight without taking a break or feeling any significant pain or discomfort, you’re not ready for serious training. Start with combination run/walks until you can run for 30 minutes without stopping. Keep in mind distance isn’t a factor yet.

GWhen you are trying to add muscle and lose fat weight, it can seem as though nothing you do is working. The following are some of the best tips for building strength and packing on muscle that really work. Start implementing these into your lifestyle right now to see some big gains.

First, you have to make sure you are eating enough protein. Many people simply do not have enough protein in their diet, and this means that they could actually be stripping muscle from their body whenever they have an intense workout. It starts with the nutrition. Eat at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Meat, such as fish and poultry, are best for this, but you can supplement with high quality protein drinks as well.

Second, if you are a beginner, you should make sure you work out the largest muscle groups with the exercises you do. Instead of focusing on the smaller, more isolated movements for specific, smaller muscles, you should look at the exercises that hit the most muscles at once. For example, you should be doing bench presses, squats, deadlifts, bent over rows, dips, and military presses. Do two to three sets of these with about a minute’s rest between. Go heavier so that you get about eight to ten reps tops.

Eventually, your body will grow accustomed to the workout you are doing. If you want to keep growing, you need to change your routine every time you hit one of these plateaus. Those who have been lifting for a while know that they need to add in some other types of exercises to hit those smaller muscles. Add these exercises for a few months, and then go back to your original workout to throw the body into confusion once more. This will help you continue to grow!

iStock_000005455498XSmallHave you ever had someone tell you that you should try HIIT as a method of losing fat and gaining speed and endurance? If you have, and were confused by the term, worry no longer! HIIT simply stands for high intensity interval training, and is one of the best options for those who are trying to lose weight. The training combines two of the top methods for burning fat in a healthy manner. The idea is to have the workout boost both the aerobic and the anaerobic fitness levels. This is better than simply doing cardio, because that only helps with the aerobic fitness.

HIIT offers a number of benefits. Your body will continue to burn calories for up to forty-eight hours after the workout. You will also find that alternating between high and low intensity will burn more calories in the same amount of time as a workout of steady intensity. Interval training will boost your metabolism and it can help you to build lean muscle. All of these things mean you are burning more calories, and thus losing weight. Many people find that HIIT helps them to lose weight faster than other methods.

You can create some fun and intense workouts using the HIIT methods. You can walk or jog on a treadmill or out on the streets for five minutes and follow it up with two minutes of all-out running, and then repeat the process several times. You could work with weights for a single set and then follow that up with some high intensity mountain climbers or other aerobic activity. Go back to the weights for another set and then switch to the aerobic exercise. Do this back and forth for your entire weightlifting routine for the day for a workout that gives you a great pump!

On January 25, 2014, the Yuma Territorial Marathon and Half-Marathon will take place in southern Yuma County in Arizona. The certified course, which is level for the most part, takes runners through a number of different communities, including Somerton, San Luis, and Gadsden. Many runners actually set their best times on this course. The raceway is also quite scenic.

The start and finish line of the race is a Cocopah Resort and Casino, which also happens to be a convenient place for you to stay if you are coming in for the race from out of town. The casino also offers some entertainment and excitement for runners and their guests as well. The top three male and female finishers in both the full and the half-marathon, and the top three finishers in each age bracket for male and female, will also receive awards. Everyone who races will receive a t-shirt.

The marathon’s website offers all of the information needed to sign up for the events, so if you are in the Yuma area, or you want to visit for the race, head to the site and learn how to register. The site even offers information on course elevations, the course map, and previous records so the runners know what they will want to shoot for! Keep in mind that the Arizona heat can be rough, so make sure you hydrate properly.

After the completion of the race, you can head into the resort for some rest in your room, a meal, and perhaps some time on the slot machines. Those who live in the area can mingle with some of the other runners or head home to unwind after the race. Each year, this race is getting bigger, better, and more impressive. It is fast becoming one of the best running events in the Southwestern United States.

iStock_000002664912XSmallWhen you think about getting fit and staying in great shape the rest of your life, what is the first thing that comes to mind? If you are like many people, you think about the exercises you need to start adding to your life. While these are certainly important, they are just one part of the recipe to a healthy body. You also need to make sure you are eating right. Fortunately, eating right is not as difficult or as boring as it might sound.

You need to make sure you are eating the right foods for starters. Instead of eating simply carbohydrates, you want to eat healthy complex carbs instead. These include leafy greens, oats, brown rice, and whole grain flour. Salads and fruits will become a very important part of your diet. You also need to eat plenty of lean protein. The best options include poultry and fish. However, you can’t eat fried versions of these proteins and expect to get the same results! Another good option for protein is from beans and nuts.

Stay away from the processed foods, fried foods, fast food, and fatty foods that take up so much of the grocery store shelves these days. Stick to fresh food whenever you can. Frozen can work as well, and they may even contain more nutrients since the fruits and veggies are flash frozen at the point of peak ripeness.

You need to hydrate, but you need to hydrate right. Instead of soft drinks or energy drinks, choose water or green tea. These are healthier options, and they will not add useless calories to your diet. In fact, green tea can even help you shed some weight.

Once you start eating better, you will begin to look better and have more energy. Start eating right today and see how much better you feel tomorrow!
