Have Fun With Your Cardio Workouts

Couple doing push-ups in home gymNow that spring is here, the long winter is behind us and we can get outside again. After spending most of the winter cooped up and running on the treadmill, here are some great ways to get outdoors and put some fun back into your cardio workouts.

There are many sports that offer a great cardiovascular workout. Basketball is one of the best, especially if you are able to play full-court. There are probably outdoor courts in your area, as well as indoor courts in case the weather turns ugly. Grab some friends and hoop it up. If you are unable to find a group of six or ten to play basketball with, just one will do. Grab your tennis racket and head for the nearest court. Many neighborhoods and public parks offer free tennis courts to residents and guests.

If you live near a body of water, you have plenty of cardio options at your fingertips. Swimming is certainly a great way to get moving and keep your heart rate up, but rowing is as well. Canoeing and kayaking are great exercise, and often provide beautiful views as well.

Of course, we might not be out of the woods just yet. If a cold snap hits, or you live in a climate that isn’t quite warm enough yet for these outdoor options, you can still mix it up and have some fun. A spin class will keep you motivated, and the elliptical is a nice change of pace from the treadmill. You can also take a page out of Rocky’s book and do some boxing or jump roping. No matter what you choose, find something fun that will challenge you and take you out of the same boring routine.
